JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A car chase of a domestic violance suspect that began in Nassau County ended Tuesday afternoon in the Arlington area, where a SWAT team surrounded a home and eventually shot a suspect.
A home in the 1200 block of Bellemeade Boulevard near the intersection of Townsend Boulevard and Lonestar Road was at the center of the SWAT standoff, during which 28-year-old Anthony Alexander Datri was shot.
The incident began in Yulee, Fla., where at about 3:50 p.m. the Nassau County Sheriff's Office was called to a home in response to a domestic violence situation that involved gunfire.
According to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, deputies arrived at the scene as the suspect was fleeing the home in a vehicle.
They said the man took off, running deputies off the road. He was pursued as he traveled south and into Jacksonville.
Police broke off their pursuit of Datri on the Dames Point Bridge.
They said the suspect exited on Merrill Road and was involved in a crash. Datri got out of his vehicle and stole the vehicle of a bystander, who had asked if he needed help, and drove to the home on Bellemeade Boulevard, officers said.
According to police, Datri barricaded himself inside the home, along with a woman and 5-year-old boy. A Jacksonville SWAT team responded and surrounded the house.
"The suspect actually, at one point in time, broke out the sliding glass doors of the residence and pointed a weapon into the back yard area that was surrounded by police and fired one shot. At that point in time, the suspect retreated back into the house. After a brief point in time, he was back outside brandishing the gun again -- pulled the gun up and pointed it in the direction of the police officer -- at which time two shots were fired by a SWAT officer, striking the suspect and disabling him," said JSO Chief Rick Graham.
Datri was taken to an area hospital, where he was in critical condition. Police said he is facing two charges of aggravated assault, one count of false imprisonment, and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
This was the seventh police-involved shooting so far in 2008.
