JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man shot by a sheriff's officer after a carjacking, high-speed chase and SWAT standoff was upgraded to stable condition in the hospital as police released information about his background and what led to the standoff.
Anthony D'Atri, 28, was shot and wounded Tuesday afternoon after the chase from Nassau County into Jacksonville in a stolen car.
D'Atri ended up at his sister's home on Bellemeade Boulevard in Arlington, where he held her 5-year-old autistic son hostage as officers surrounded the home, police said.
"After police showed up, they told us to get inside because he had a gun," said witness, 15-year-old Matthew Simpson. "It was one of the scariest things I'd ever seen. Why would he do that in front of a little boy that could harm him for life?"
D'Atri fired at police and officers fired back.
Police did not say where D'Atri was hit or how many times. No officers were injured in the standoff.
D'Atri faces two counts of aggravated assault, one count of false imprisonment and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon for the incident in Duval County. He faces 14 other charges in Nassau County.
The incident began about 3:50 p.m. when the Nassau County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of domestic violence with gunfire at a Yulee home he shared with a woman.
D'Atri allegedly threatened to kill his girlfriend and three friends with her, then fired five to seven shots into the ground. Deputies said he pointed the gun at one man and pulled the trigger, but was out of ammunition.
Deputies said D'Atri was fleeing the home in a vehicle when they arrived. Nassau County authorities said D'Atri ran deputies off the road as deputies pursued him south into Jacksonville.
Officers broke off their pursuit on the Dames Point Bridge.
Police said D'Atri exited on Merrill Road and was involved in a crash, where Datri got out of his vehicle and stole the vehicle of a bystander who had asked the man if he needed help. He then drove to his sister's home in the 1200 block of Bellemeade Boulevard, officers said.
According to police, D'Atri barricaded himself inside the home, with the woman and her 5-year-old son still inside. A Jacksonville SWAT team responded and surrounded the house.
"The suspect actually, at one point in time, broke out the sliding glass doors of the residence and pointed a weapon into the backyard area that was surrounded by police and fired one shot. At that point in time, the suspect retreated back into the house," said JSO Chief Rick Graham. "After a brief point in time, he was back outside brandishing the gun again -- pulled the gun up and pointed it in the direction of the police officer -- at which time two shots were fired by a SWAT officer, striking the suspect and disabling him."
D'Atri was taken to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center.
Channel 4 learned that D'Atri was released from prison in 2006 after serving four years for armed aggravated assault and was convicted in 1997 of the same charge in 1997.
This was the seventh police-involved shooting so far in 2008. Three of the suspects involved were killed and one officer is recovering after being shot.
