Police Expand Hunt For Boca Raton Mall Killer

POSTED: Monday, March 24, 2008

After two abductions and slayings from a Boca Raton Mall over the past year, city leaders are offering a large reward and law enforcement officials have alerted similar malls -- including one in Jacksonville -- to be on the alert.

Nancy Bochicchio's 911 call lasted a split second. It was the single mother's last desperate plea for help but the line went dead.

Bochicchio and her 7-year-old daughter, Joey, were abducted from the Town Center mall in Boca Raton on Dec. 12. Both were later discovered bound and shot to death in their car in the mall parking lot.

Detectives are looking into links between the Bochicchio case and several others, including the slaying of a 52-year-old woman abducted and shot to death after shopping at the same mall one year ago.

Authorities said they believe the same man abducted a woman and a child from the same mall in August.

Witnesses describe the killer as a white man with a good tan between the ages of 18 and 25. Police say he is between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall with a medium build. They also think he could have a ponytail.
Those victims were robbed but unharmed, also left bound inside their vehicle.

The cases were profiled in January on the television show "America's Most Wanted."

A task force has been formed to catch the killer and the city is offering a $350,000 reward. Anyone with information in this case is asked to call Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County at 800-458-TIPS.

WJXT learned that law enforcement authorities sent warnings to other open-air Florida shopping centers, including the St. Johns Town Center.

Simon Properties, which manages St. Johns Town Center, said that they received a composite sketch from the Boca Raton task force and have increased security in response to the case despite there being no apparent link to the Jacksonville area.

"There is no connection between this individual and St. Johns Town Center, but we are asking for the public's help to identify him and bring him to justice," the mall said in a prepared statement.

"This brings it more closer to home when you have an image of someone that may be committing these crimes," said Ken Jefferson of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police always want shoppers to be aware of their surroundings, but even more now that a criminal who targets mall patrons is on the loose. They want women with small children to be especially careful and report any suspicious behavior.

"We don't want to put fear or paranoia into people ... but just be mindful that someone could be watching you and just be careful," Jefferson said. "People need to be very cognizant of their surroundings. When you are pulling into a parking lot, if anybody looks suspicious -- anyone sitting in a car or truck near where you trying to park -- find somewhere else to park. It's always the safest thing to do."
