Palatka Police Officer Shot During Traffic Stop
POSTED: Sunday, March 30, 2008
A Palatka police officer is recovering after he was shot Saturday night by a man he pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving, Putnam County officials said.
Cpl. Pete Ruiz stopped a car on U.S. Highway 17 just south of Carter Road about 8 p.m.
When Ruiz approached the driver's door the driver, Paul D. Savage, 39, shot him once in the left shoulder, according to Maj. Keith Riddick of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies were told Savage got out of his vehicle and continued to shoot at Ruiz, who returned fire. Savage got back in his vehicle and sped north on U.S. 17.
Another Palatka officer, who arrived as the shooting ended, began chasing the car. Savage was stopped about five miles from the shooting scene, but ran into the woods.
Savage was apprehended by Palatka police officers and Putnam County deputies with the assistance of a Palatka police dog. He was taken to Putnam Community Hospital for treatment of injuries received from the police dog, and then was booked into the Putnam County Jail.
Savage has a North Carolina address, but was in Palatka working on a job, Riddick said.
Ruiz was flown to Shands Medical Center in Gainesville for treatment of his injury, where he was in stable condition.
Ruiz is a six-year veteran of the Palatka Police Department.
