JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A local family of eight that has been dealing with a deadly disease got a big boost Saturday afternoon, when the family's newly renovated home was revealed.
For years, the Goodalls have lived in a two-and-a-half bedroom home. The father of the house, Kenny Goodall, is battling Lou Gehrig's disease and cannot walk or talk.
He and his wife, Karen Goodall, have six children.
"When we first came to this house and this family, this was a two-and-a-half bedroom with eight people in it, and with medical concerns, dad is very ill, this was a very difficult house to live in," Builder's Care Director Chris Simons.
Builder's Care joined forces with ICI Homes to make the family's life a lot easier.
Hundreds of volunteers helped with the much-needed expansion that turned the small house into a five-bedroom home and made things easier for Kenny Goodall to get around.
"For me, it's overwhelming. I didn't know what to expect, but it's beyond words and wonderful," Karen Goodall said. "Even though we've seen a lot of what had taken place already, the outcome is incredible. The things that complete strangers were willing to do for us -- words cannot express how we feel."
She called the completely renovated and expanded home nothing short of a labor of love.
"God is so good. He's blessed us so much," Goodall said.
The expansion project took 10 days.
Volunteers said it wasn't hard to recruit the help of the 300 to 500 people needed to expand the Goodalls' home.
"They just lined up, they did more than I asked, for that I am eternally grateful, it made our job easier," said Don Welford, ICI Homes area president.
In addition to the renovation of their home, the Goodalls also got a new van.
