New reports surfaced on Wednesday that one of the children suspected of plotting to harm a schoolteacher might have used a steak knife to threaten another student.

Nine third-graders have been suspended from Center Elementary School after school officials and police began looking into an alleged plan to harm their teacher that included the kids bringing several items to school to carry out the scheme.

Three of the nine students -- ages 9 to 10 -- are facing juvenile charges that include conspiracy to commit a crime of aggravated assault and possession of weapons on school grounds or school safety zone.

However, police said just when they thought knew the extent of what was planned at the elementary school, they found out more.

Police said they knew the group of students planned to use a steak knife, handcuffs, tape and a heavy crystal paperweight to hurt their teacher, but according to investigators, one student is facing a charge of aggravated assault for allegedly threatening another kid with a knife.

"The knife was shown and was it placed toward a student's hand and she was told she'd be cut," said Waycross Police Department Chief Tony Tanner.

Police the threat was made by a 9-year-old girl who brought the weapon to school. Now, detectives are investigating whether any other students were threatened with the knife.

"I thought we were basically done, and now as these students come forward, we need to look and make sure that we find anyone else who was threatened," Tanner said.

He said the 9-year-old girl was charged on Wednesday.

Investigators said the ages of the children being charged would prevent them from being severely punished.

"Our goal here is not to lock these kids up for a long period of time. They were released to their parents because of their ages," Tanner said.

Amid the shock and allegations at Center Elementary School, the president of the school council said he was focusing on the positive, and called the child who saw the knife and alerted authorities a hero.

"That child told a grownup and was able to avoid a catastrophe," he said.

Police in Waycross have been urging parents to ask with their children whether they were threatened at school.

The third-graders involved in the alleged plot could face anything from detention to mandatory counseling.
