Man Accused Of Abducting, Assaulting Girl

POSTED: Monday, April 7, 2008
UPDATED: 11:14 pm EDT April 7, 2008

A 31-year-old man accused of taking an 11-year-old girl from Jacksonville to an abandoned home in St. Johns County and forcing himself on her locked in jail accused of several charges, including capital sexual battery.

Kenneth Bernard was charged Sunday evening with child abuse, burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Monday, detectives with the sheriff's office special victims unit added charges of capital sexual battery and false imprisonment.

The investigation began just before 11 a.m. Sunday when deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 4600 block of county Road 208. Deputies who searched the car reported finding two pills and a baggie containing a white powdery substance under the driver's seat.

After additional deputies responded, they searched an abandoned house about 300 feet from the car and said they found Bernard with the girl. After deputies separated Bernard from the girl, she told them he threatened to kill her aunt if she refused to "prostitute" her body with him.

Investigators told Channel 4's Laura Mazzeo that Bernard admitted to using marijuana, cocaine and Ecstasy before waking up the 11-year-old girl at 3 a.m. and telling her to get dressed and making up a story that he needed to take her to St. Augustine.

"This is just an elaborate story that he came up with in an attempt to get her to do what it was he wanted her to do," St. Johns County Detective Mike Strausbaugh said. "It's tragic that people will do these types of things to innocent children."

Bernard was ordered held on $110,000 bond on the burglary and drug charges, and he was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning on the new charges.
