Teacher Accused Of Sexual Battery Of Student

POSTED: Wednesday, April 9, 2008

A teacher at Lighthouse Christian Academy in Mandarin was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with sexual battery on a 17-year-old student.

According to the police report, William Tinsley IV, 28, assaulted the girl last fall in his Arlington home. Police said they first learned of the allegation in January, and after their investigation, Tinsley turned him in and immediately invoked his right to remain silent.

The victim said she had been a student of Tinsley for two years and said he frequently made comments like "you're pretty" that she felt were inappropriate for a teacher and had asked her to call his cell phone. She said he asked her to watch an R-rated movie called "Boogie Nights," which is about the pornography industry.

Police said Tinsley's MySpace screen name is "Diggler," which is the name of a porn star in the movie.

According to the police report, she agreed to go to his house on Fort Caroline Road on Oct. 12. She said he asked her to smoke from a hookah pipe and drink alcohol, but she said she declined both. She said she kissed him while they were on the couch and he led her to his bedroom, where they took each other's clothes off.

She said he fondled her genitals, but she declined oral sex. She acknowledged to detectives that it was "weird" that the sex never progressed further.

She told investigators she would have told her mother if they had actually had sex.

According to the police report, the victim's cell phone records show 80 calls between the victim and the suspect and her description of the interior of his home were consistent with the details she gave investigators.

Lighthouse Christian Academy President David Eure said he was stunned when he learned about the sexual allegations made against one of his top teachers.

"It was just total amazement, shock, anger, sadness all at the same time when I heard these accusations," Eure said.

The school is known for its small classroom settings for children with learning difficulties partners with community churches. School administrators said they did background checks on employees and no red flags were ever raised for Tinsley and that the teacher came with highly regarded references before he was hired two years ago.

Lighthouse Christian Academy officials said Tinsley was suspended after they learned of the allegations against the teacher. Seven weeks later, the teacher was fired after refusing to write a statement.

On the River City Swim League Web site, Tinsley remains listed as a swim coach.

While police said they do not think there are any other victims involved, they said they're concerned other girls might be afraid to come forward.

"If your daughter says something, please call the police. We want to see justice served. Whatever needs to be done, I want to get to the bottom of this," Eure said.

Tinsley remains in jail on $5,000 bond.
