JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- As the drought in Flagler County worsens, officials have enacted a week-long burn ban.The move comes a day after wildfires in nearby St. Johns and Brevard Counties wrecked havoc, closing roads, including a stretch of Interstate 95.Flagler County Commission Chairman Jim O'Connell banned open burning, the use of open fire pits and containers, campfires and throwing matches or cigarettes from vehicles, but does not ban the use of barbecue grills.
First offenses will merit a warning, but second offenses could net scofflaws a $500 fine or 60 days in the county jail.“It is strictly a precautionary measure,” Nate McCollum, Flagler County Emergency Services Director said. “The winds have subsided but the county is still very dry and we are on alert for wildfires.”The burn ban will be renewed weekly as needed, officials said.
