Mail Carriers Collect 95 Tons For Food Bank

POSTED: Tuesday, May 13, 2008

More than 280,000 pounds of food collected Saturday by postal carriers was delivered to the Second Harvest Food bank, filling the facility with mail bins while the staff sorts through all the donations.

The National Association of Letter Carriers collected the food as part of its annual Stamp Out Hunger drive. Many others are volunteering to sort the non-perishable food.

Officials said this was the most successful year for collections, with donors leaving food by their mailboxes or in boxes at Publix Super Markets.
