Attack At High School Caught On Camera

POSTED: Tuesday, May 13, 2008
UPDATED: 10:44 pm EDT May 13, 2008

Video of the beginning of a high school attack that witnesses called racially motivated was released by Jacksonville police on Tuesday, giving a closer look at exactly how the assault on sophomore student began.

The video was taken on a cell phone camera and shows the 17-year-old victim, Karl Koch Jr., being approached and then attacked by multiple students at Forrest High School.

The video clip shows Koch walking away when all of a sudden another student comes up from behind and punches him. When Koch tried to get away, a second teen punched him the eye again.

Koch's father, Karl Koch Sr., said what the video released Tuesday doesn't show is the violent attack that continued on his son.

"Where it stops there is when the young man comes around behind my son and sweeps his legs out from under him," Koch Sr. said. "You hear, like, sequences of punching and hitting, and then the camera goes back to the three young men walking away, celebrating and high fiving."

The teen was beaten so badly, he has nine stitches above his eye and six screws holding his wrist together.

"When I saw him in the ambulance and saw him all tore up, I lost it. It was tough," Koch Sr. said. "That the thing that hurts the worse --- I couldn't protect him."

According to witness statements to police, the three juveniles -- two 15-year-olds and a 17-year-old -- attacked Koch because of the color of his skin.

According to the police report, one of the suspects said, "Look at the white boy, he looks like a victim," before punching Koch in the eye.

When Channel 4 showed the video to Forrest High School Principal Helen Kirkpatrick, the school leader was disgusted by what she saw.

"I hate that Karl was injured, but the fact that he was injured allegedly because of racial reasons is very disturbing," Kirkpatrick said.

The three students seen attacking Koch Jr. on tape are all charged with aggravated battery and could also face as many as two years expulsion from the school.
