Mom Accused Of DUI In Crash That Killed Son

POSTED: Wednesday, May 14, 2008

The mother of a teenage boy killed in a traffic wreck was arrested on Tuesday and charged with DUI manslaughter in the death of her 13-year-old son.

Investigators arrested Angela Harper, saying the mother was intoxicated when she lost control of her car last month. Her son, Jesse Harper, and five other teenagers were in the car at the time of the crash.

The wreck happened at about 2 a.m. on April 18, when Harper was traveling on the ramp from Interstate 95 to Interstate 295 northbound when the she lost control of the 2001 Saturn hatchback, crossed two lanes of traffic and struck the guardrail.

The impact of the wreck caused five passengers to be thrown from the car.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators said Angela Harper was the only person in the vehicle wearing a seat belt.

Jesse Harper was pronounced dead at the scene. All the other occupants of the car, ranging in age from 13 to the 31-year-old driver, were hospitalized with serious injuries.

"There were some related, and some not. Some were friends. Some were sitting on top of each other in the small vehicle. Too many people were in that vehicle as well. Plus, the driver had been drinking. So, unfortunately, someone died," said FHP Lt. Bill Leeper.

According to investigators, the arrest was made nearly a month after the fatal wreck after toxicology reports were completed, showing Angela Harper had a blood alcohol level of .11.
