JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Department of Children and Families intends to revoke the license of Northside day care facility after employees took dozens of children on what authorities consider a dangerous ride during a field trip.
DCF spokesman John Harrell said 38 children from Kids Creation Child Care on Soutel were stuffed into a van that only seats 15 as they returned to the center after a visit to Chuck E. Cheese’s by Regency Square.
“This is a van that could seat 15 children comfortably, or at least sufficiently, but instead you have 38 children stuffed in that van,” Harrell said.
Harrell said the children, who are between the ages of 1 and 4, were sitting on other children's laps, some were sitting on the floor between the seats and others were standing in the van.
An employee at the kid-friendly restaurant, who saw the children piling into the van, called police.
Police ordered the day care to get a second van to transport the children. When it arrived, they found that neither driver was properly licensed. One driver only had a learner's permit and one had a criminal history.
“One of those drivers had a criminal record of assault with a deadly weapon,” Harrell said.
He said after investigating the incident with the van, DCF did an inspection of the day care itself and found many problems, including that it was over capacity, had exposed sockets and roaches.
“This is extremely disturbing. This is inhumane, the way these children were treated,” Harrell said. “There will be fines and there will be action taken if children are put in danger. We’re not going to stand for this.”
Harrell said the day care center is not currently facing any criminal charges, but the DCF could fine the business and will pursue pulling its state license to care for children.
The day care will have an opportunity to appeal that decision. The owner of the day care declined comment about the incident.
