Brantley County Wildfire 75 Percent Contained

Firefighters in southeast Georgia were able to get a wildfire in Brantley County about 75 percent contained Tuesday evening.

The fire burned about 1,200 acres near Waynesville, which is between Nahunta and Brunswick.

Firefighters from Brantley County and the Georgia Forestry Commission have been battling the flames since Tuesday afternoon. Officials said the fire began at about 2 p.m. That’s when they said they received a call about a house fire with an adjoining woods fire.

The blaze spread rapidly in the Atkinson community and stretched to Brown Town Road, which is in the Waynesville community.

The blaze threatened 100 homes in the area, but Tuesday night, the Georgia Forestry Commission said those homes were no longer in danger.

“The majority of (homeowners) actually stayed. Most of the houses that we saw had somebody there. Some of them had sent their children and their wives off and the husbands stayed. For the most part, they stayed to protect their homes and wait it out,” said Michelle Lartz, of the Waynesville Volunteer Fire Department.

No injuries have been reported, but officials told Channel 4 that the flames damaged a mobile home and destroyed a camper trailer.

Fire officials said they hope to have the blaze completely under control by Wednesday morning if winds calm down as expected.

Fire investigators said a homeowner who was burning trash might have caused the wildfire.
