Armed Robber Caught On Tape

POSTED: Wednesday, May 28, 2008

In an effort to track down an armed robber, Jacksonville police recently released surveillance video of the thief as he made demands and got away with cash from a Southside credit union.

The robbery took place Tuesday morning at the Jax Federal Credit Union on Belfort Road.

A day later, police released video of the double-dipping bandit as he took money from not one, but two tellers’ drawers, in a matter of seconds.

The robber did not try to hide his intentions. Holding a gun in his left hand, a bag in his right hand and wearing a ski mask, the man made it clear as soon as he stepped in the door of the credit union he wanted money.

“He pointed it at her head. So, you’re standing there and all of a sudden you’re looking down the barrel of a gun, of course you go into immediate disbelief and shock,” said Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ken Jefferson.

The gunman told the first teller to fill his bag with money, and the surveillance video shows the woman emptying her top money drawer as fast as she can.

However, what the first teller gave up wasn’t enough for the robber, who then moved to a second teller and stood just inches away from a terrified customer. The robber told the customer not to move and the woman kept her eyes straight ahead of her while the second teller emptied her drawer too.

“He reaches over, that person and puts his bag down so the teller can put her money into this bag, and then he walks out casually with the mask still on,” Jefferson said.

In about 10 seconds, the armed robber was in and out of the credit union, walking away with just over $8,000 in cash.

No one was hurt during the robbery, but the robber remains at large.

“There are times when persons in their minds think they got away with it, but we eventually catch up with them because they’re all greedy,” Jefferson said.

Someone in the credit union during the robbery followed the masked man out the door and was able to get a tag number while he took off. Police said they’re hoping that information will lead to the robber’s arrest.

The robber was seen leaving the scene in a blue full-size Dodge pickup truck or van with a Louisiana license plate tag W334229.

He was described as a white man, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 200 pounds.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
