Bullet Holes, Questions Remain After 5 Shot

POSTED: Friday, May 30, 2008

There are almost a dozen bullet holes in the house and a trail of blood on the driveway where five people were shot Thursday night when police said gunfire originated from a passing car.

After the shooting about 9 p.m. at the intersection of Pearce and W. Fourth streets -- near Edward Waters College -- rescue personnel transported four to the hospital and another made it there on his own.

Two of the five were believed to have serious injuries, but none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

Police searched the area by ground and with a helicopter, not only looking for the gunmen, but in case there were other victims.

Police had not released the names of those shot by midday Friday, but neighbors told Channel 4's Adam Landau they were in their teens and early 20s.

"That's just amazing -- it's just like they don't care," said one neighbor, who was too scared to give his name. "They don't think about nobody else."

Police questioned the families and neighbors trying to determine more about the car where the shots came from and the number and description of those inside.

"We don't know how many firearms were used; there were multiple shots fired," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Chief Wayne Clark said Thursday night. "There were a large group of people gathered at the house on the corner."

In addition to not knowing the identity of the gunmen, they were not sure why the shooting occurred.

"Them boys think it's revenge," said one boy who said knows some of the victims. "They think it's revenge."

"I think it'll probably happen to our house next. I don't know," another teenager told Landau.

Residents of the area just hope the violence stops so kids in the area can safely play outside.

"Y'll need to stop all the shooting -- all the drive-bys. Y'll need to think about the families."

Anyone with information that could help detectives solve the crime can do so by calling police or Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous and be eligible for a $1,000 cash reward.
