Woman, Boy Honored For Heroic Acts

POSTED: Monday, June 2, 2008
UPDATED: 9:41 pm EDT June 2, 2008

Even though she said she didn't do anything special, a local good Samaritan was honored by the Clay County Sheriff's Office on Monday.

Bonnie Modling said she did what any other person would do when she saw a woman being carjacked outside a Clay County store last April.

Nevertheless, Sheriff Rick Beseler calls her a hero, and gave Modling the Citizen Service Award for confronting a man who was carjacking a 75-year-old woman in the parking lot of a Blanding Boulevard Wal-Mart.

"It's something that's not necessary. I feel like I did what I was supposed to do, but it's very nice to get,” said Modling.

During the incident, Modling was able to get to the woman before she was injured, but she couldn't stop the carjacker from driving away in the victim's car.

She called 911 and was able to tell deputies where the man appeared to be going.

Deputies chased the suspect to Lawtey, where they were finally able to stop him.

Sheriff Rick Beseler gives 9-year-old Walker Alba an award for being a good Samaritan.

The sheriff said without Modling's quick thinking, the man would probably have gotten away.

"Her actions helped us track down this man," Beseler said.

Modling said what's important to her is the impression her actions have made on her children.

"My kids think it's pretty cool,” said Modling.

The carjacking victim has recovered from her ordeal, and she gave Modeling flowers and a card to express her gratitude.

Modling was not the only hero honored by the sheriff on Monday. A 9-year-old boy who helped save his grandfather’s life was also recognized.

Walker Alba acted quickly when his grandfather, Raymond, fell out of a boat while the two were on the water.

The boy stopped the boat and helped his grandfather climb safely back in the boat.

On Monday, Raymond told Channel 4 that his grandson knows what to do on the water.

“He's pretty educated on that. He’d been doing it all his life – hunting with me since he was about two and fishing, and he’s got his own boat,” said the boy’s grandfather.

The sheriff said the boy acted much older than he is in helping bring his grandfather to safety.
