Trial Set For Man Accused Of Hiding Boy's Body

POSTED: Monday, June 9, 2008
UPDATED: 6:44 pm EDT June 9, 2008

A Glynn County judge has set a July 7 trial date for a Brunswick man charged with helping to hide the body of a slain 6-year-old boy last year.

Donald Dale will be the first person to stand trial in the death of young Christopher Barrios, whose body was found wrapped in trash bag and dumped by a road in March 2007. Police say Dale's friend George Edenfield and Edenfield's parents sexually assaulted and killed the boy.

Dale is not charged with murder.

During Monday's hearing, Superior Court Judge Stephen Scarlett scolded attorneys on both sides for dragging their feet in the case against Dale.

"January, February, March, April, May -- at what point in time did you realize there was no plea agreement?" Scarlett asked.

Dale's attorney rejected a plea deal last week that he had been discussing with prosecutors for the last seven months. Scarlett said the defense attorneys were "playing games and creating drama."

For six days in March of 2007, searchers scoured the woods of South Georgia for any sign of Christopher Barrios. The boy's body was found in a black trash bag among some trees and brush just 15 feet from a roadside behind the Glynn County Airport.

Christopher's family was pleased that Dale would stand trial.

"We have been waiting so long, my nerves are snap tore up," said Christopher's grandmother, Sue Rodriguez. "I go to work and try to work and get to thinking about that beautiful baby and boy and how they done him."

Dale's family is also anxious for a trial to begin, saying he will benefit from a jury trial.

"He's been in there 15 months and he has no clue of what happened with those people, what they did," Dale's mother told Channel 4's Laura Mazzeo.
