JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A month after Jacksonville police asked for the public's help in their search for an identity theft suspect, Duval County authorities arrested a man they said scammed several people out of their personal information to get credit cards in their names.Police said a surveillance camera at a Jacksonville Wal-Mart captured video of Dustin Johnson leaving with a big-screen TV that was purchased with a temporary credit card issued after the opening of a fraudulent account.Investigators said Johnson scammed at least four people. He is charged with fraud.
Police said Johnson would use a phone book and targeted people with common last names. Then, they said he would skim the pages to look for people with older-sounding first names because police said he thought older the victims would be easier targets. They said Johnson would call the unsuspecting victims on the phone and tell them there was a problem with their credit. Police said Johnson talked them into giving him their full names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers.Once he had that information, investigators said Johnson would go to Wal-Mart and open credit cards accounts and then go shopping."If you get calls from Equifax or some other agency inquiring about your personal information, hang up the phone," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman Ken Jefferson.Police said Johnson's alleged crime spree spanned several months before his arrest. They said people should never give out personal information to anyone, especially not someone over the phone.
