JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A triple shooting inside a parking garage at a Jacksonville hospital left one man dead and a child and the child's mother injured Thursday afternoon.
"I heard three or four shots, and I stopped. Then I heard four or five more, and I turned around and saw security guards and patients going everywhere," said hospital worker Melissa Gaynor.
The shooting happened at about 5:30 p.m. in parking structure B at Baptist Medical Center on Prudential Road.
According to Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Chief Rick Graham, a man shot his 11-year-old son and the child's mother before fatally shooting himself in "a very obvious domestic-related incident."
"We've got a confirmed male who is dead -- deceased here in the parking lot. We've got a seriously, critically injured female shot, also here in the parking garage near the emergency center. She has been transported to Shands hospital. We have a young, 11-year-old male that has also been wounded. He is still being treated here at the hospital, and he in fair condition," Graham said.
Graham said the family was not from Florida. He said the family was at the hospital because the boy was being treated for an undisclosed medical condition.
According to police, a nurse was wheeling the 11-year-old out of the emergency room exit near an elevator that leads to the parking garage when the boy's father pulled out a gun and opened fire.
"As I was walking, I saw a little boy … running. He had a gunshot to his chest, I think. He was running toward another girl, telling her to help him. As I was walking, I saw a police officers setting up and a guy shot where blood was running down his face," said one witness.
"As you step out, there is blood on the floor. You can see where it drips around and heads into the parking garage. It's fresh. I could see where some of it was wet. So, apparently, and I'm just guessing, when she stepped out of the elevator, he shot her," said another witness.
Graham said no one other than those injured were in any type of danger during the shooting because the shooting happened in an area that is not heavily populated.
The names of the man and his two victims were not immediately released.
Baptist remained open and continued to operate as normal as detectives continued their investigation.
At 10 p.m. the parking garage where the shooting took place was reopened.
