JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police on Wednesday announced the arrest of two men in the death of an Edward Waters College executive killed in his Arlington apartment on March 10.
Jeffrey Hardiman, 45, was the vice president of planning and research at the college. His body was discovered March 10 by a maintenance worker at River Bend Apartments.
Anthony Mackey, 24, and Keith Murphy, 21, were charged with murder and booked into the Duval County jail.
Police said Murphy admitted to helping Mackey kill Hardiman. According to the arrest report, the two intended to rob the victim, but ended up struggling with him.
Murphy told police Mackey wrapped an electrical cord around Hardiman's neck and choked him to death.
"I know that the three were, at the minimum, acquaintances," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Lt. Pat Ivey said. "Sometime, while being inside the victim's apartment, there was strangulation and trauma to the victim."
Police said the pair stole a large amount of money and a cell phone from Hardiman and left the scene in his car.
Both have extensive criminal records.
Mackey and Murphy were being held without bond in the Duval County jail.
