10-Year-Old Accidentally Shot Critical But Stable

State Attorney Says No Charges Will Be Filed In Case

POSTED: Thursday, June 26, 2008

The 10-year-old East Palatka boy accidentally shot in the head on June 15 remains hospitalized, but his condition has stabilized, his father told the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

Dakota Wilson is breathing on his own and is able to move his arms and legs, Scott Wilson told authorities. Because he continues to have a breathing tube, he responds to questions by writing on a chalkboard.

Deputies said the boy was shot by a 14-year-old friend while playing with a pistol in the Wilson home on county Road 207A.

The boy was initially transported to Putnam Community Medical Center, then airlifted to Shands-Gainesville Medical Center.

A benefit account was opened for anyone wishing to help with the boy's medical bills. Contributions can be made to the Wilson Family Fun at the First Federal Bank in Hastings.

"The family is most appreciative of the tremendous support and prayers of their friends and community," according to a release from the sheriff's office.

Deputies said the gun was a Taurus 9 mm pistol owned by the boy's parents, who were not home at the time of the shooting.

After conducting its own investigation, the State Attorneys Office announced no charges would be filed in the case.
