A Hernando County man armed with a shotgun crashed his vehicle Tuesday afternoon in Palm Coast as he fled Flagler County sheriff's deputies after dropping a shooting victim off at a hospital in St. Johns County, deputies said.

Rudolph Mark Moats, 39, of Lacoochee, Fla., apparently kidnapped his estranged wife in Hernando County earlier Tuesday, according to the FCSO.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said that about four hours later, Moats dropped her off at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

After being dropped of at the hospital, the injured woman pointed to the man in the car and said he was the person who shot her, according to deputies.

Authorities said Moats then fled the scene and St. Johns County deputies found him traveling southbound on Interstate 95. When Moats crossed the county line, Flagler County sheriff's deputies attempted to stop him, but he continued southbound on the interstate until he exited onto Palm Coast Parkway.

From there, Moats continued east until turning north onto Palm Harbor Parkway where he eventually crashed his car into a tree near Fellowship Drive.

Deputies said they recovered the shotgun from the vehicle.

“This man presented a grave danger to this county because he was armed and driving at high speeds in a high-traffic, residential area. I congratulate our deputies for their diligence in tracking him while keeping our residents safe,” said Flagler County Sheriff Donald W. Fleming.

The shooting victim, whose name was not immediately released, was being treated for her injuries at Flagler Hospital.

Moats was transported to Florida Hospital Flagler with non-life-threatening injuries. He is expected to be transported to the Flagler County Inmate Facility after being medically cleared.

Moats is facing charges of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and aggravated fleeing and eluding. Other charges are pending.
