JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- One person was hospitalized and a juvenile was arrested after shots rang out in a downtown Jacksonville park Wednesday afternoon.
The shooting took place in Hemming Plaza shortly before 4 p.m.
Police said two people were sitting on a bench at the park when an argument erupted and one person pulled out a gun.
Witnesses in the area told Channel 4 they heard two shots fired, and then said they saw a group of 15-20 young people running through the plaza.
The shooting victim, whose identity and age have not been released, was rushed to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center. According to authorities, the victim was shot multiple times.
"It just really startled me because I couldn’t believe it. It was peaceful and quiet. We heard a pop, thinking it was firecrackers at first. Then, when I stood up, I heard a second pop and saw the smoke and saw a group just run. I just said to myself, 'Where is the safest place in the park?'" said witness Angela Houston.
A man who identified himself as the victim's brother told Channel 4 he chased the gunman before the suspected shooter was caught about two blocks from the scene of the shooting.
The juvenile suspected in the shooting was taken in to police custody on Forsyth Street near the Florida Theatre, according to Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
The shooting suspect's name has not been released. He was taken to police headquarters to be questioned by homicide detectives.
The Hemming Plaza stop of the Skyway system was temporarily closed as detectives conducted their investigation at the crime scene.
