Woman Run Over By Police Car Dies

POSTED: Sunday, July 6, 2008

A Suwannee County woman was killed early Sunday morning when she was run over by a police officer responding to a domestic disturbance call in the city of Alachua, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the incident happened just before 2 a.m. at a home on county Road 2054, northwest of Gainesville.

Alachua Officer Chad Scott told the FHP he noticed someone lying on the ground as he drove up a dirt driveway. He said he swerved, but it was too late.

Angela Tanner, 33, of Wellborn was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers said Tanner was part of the original disturbance complaint.

The FHP considered the death an accident and said no charges would be filed.

Alachua Police Department's interim chief told the Gainesville Sun that his department is taking all the necessary steps to provide grief counseling for those on duty affected by the tragedy.

"We send our condolences out to the family of the victim," Chief Joel DeCoursey Jr. said. "Unfortunately it's a bad situation for everyone that’s involved. It directly affects all those who are on scene and also our dispatch center."
