Deputies Investigate Scratch-Off Rip-Offs
Investigators Say Couple Hit 5 Stores In 9 Hours
POSTED: Friday, July 11, 2008
St. Johns County deputies are looking for a man and woman suspected of stealing lottery tickets from four Kangaroo convenience stores on Thursday and attempting to steal tickets from a fifth location.
The first reported theft occurred just after 2:30 p.m. at a store in the 6700 block of U.S. 1 South. The 21-year-old clerk said the couple asked for several scratch-off lottery tickets and the man attempted to pay with a credit card. When the clerk told him lottery sales are cash only, his female partner grabbed the tickets and they both ran from the store.
Almost same scenario was repeated about 30 minutes later at a Kangaroo store in the 4300 block of A1A South, just after 4 p.m. at the Kangaroo at 70 Masters Drive, about 6 p.m. on state Road 207.
The couple's last stop was at a store in Hastings just after 11 p.m. That clerk asked for payment before handing over the tickets. The couple again offered a credit card, but when advised they needed cash, they left the store and drove away.
The man was described as a white man between 20 and 35 years old, 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 9 inches tall wearing a white T-shirt with a design on the front, a red ball cap and sunglasses. The woman had blonde hair and was wearing a green tank top.
Two of the clerks reported the couple was driving a dark pickup truck.
Lottery officials have voided any of the stolen tickets that may have been winners as the investigation continues.
