Woman Shot, Killed In Her Westside Home

Police Say Shooting May Have Been Drive-By

POSTED: Tuesday, July 15, 2008
UPDATED: 1:05 am EDT July 16, 2008

A woman was shot and killed inside her Westside home Tuesday afternoon, according to Jacksonville police.

The shooting took place on First Street near Prospect Road. Investigators said they believe the shooting might have been a drive-by.

"They're saying that my cousin got shot in the back and it hit her in her spine and she died instantly, and it was a drive-by," said Yolanda Williams.

The victim's family told Channel 4 the victim, whose name has not been released, wasn't the intended target.

"All of the family got a call saying she was dead," said Williams.

Her family members rushed to the Westside neighborhood to be with each other.

Police closed off several blocks in the area to traffic as they conducted their investigation. Detectives went door to door to ask neighbors if they saw or heard anything.

They said some neighbors in the area told them they saw a car leaving the area after the shots were fired.

The car that witnesses saw was described as a blue, older-model Buick with tinted windows. It was seen traveling east on First Street.

Investigators said they don't have all the details and continue to try to piece together the information they've received from witnesses and from talking with neighbors.

The victim's family said dealing with their loved one's death is difficult to process, but they said it did not come as a shock. They said they blame the rise in crime and all they can do is hope for it to stop.

"It's not surprising. All I can say it's not surprising," Williams said.

Anyone with information that could help investigators is asked to call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
