JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- After responding to an online advertisement during an undercover investigation, Jacksonville police arrested on Wednesday three people in connection with a suspected brothel on the Westside.
Investigators said they were directed to a home on Collins Ridge Boulevard after responding to an ad placed in the erotic section of Craigslist.com. They said when they arrived at the home, 39-year-old Tammy Lunsford told them she'd been running the business there for years.
According to a police report, "She told us that she gets half of the money ($125 for a half hour) that girls (prostitutes) bring in. The suspect told (us) that if we would leave and come back later, she would have more girls and that we could have two girls for $275 each."
Police said Lunsford admitted she was basically the pimp behind the business.
"He actually arranged to have sexual intercourse with two females in exchange for money and they were sent to certain residential location. When they arrived the females were there. An exchange of $300 was made in exchange for sex. Both females were arrested," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Melissa Bujeda.
Robert Schein, 36, who lives in the home on Collins Ridge, was also arrested after telling officers he was the one who posted the ads for so-called massages on the Internet. H also told police he wasn't sure but that he believed the girls were also prostituting from the postings.
"Deriving support from prostitution is a very usual charge. It's usually very hard to prove. However, in these circumstances, the individual of the house who wasn't necessarily engaging in the act of prostitution, however, was receiving funds for the use of the house and facilities. He was gaining money because someone else was pimping and prostituting out of his house," said Bujeda.
A third person, Michelle Patterson, was arrested and charged with offering for or engaging in prostitution.
Residents in the area told Channel 4 they often saw naked women coming out of the home and they said they saw dozens of cars coming and going from the driveway.
"They were wearing shirts without any covers … sometimes they come out with no underwear," said one neighbor.
So, for many it came as no surprise when they saw police at the home's front door on Tuesday night.
"This has been going on for a while. We just don't know what to do you know. The neighbors, we just don't know how to go about doing something about it," the neighbor said. "I'm glad that it's over with."
Police said the extent of how many women may have been involved in the operation remains unclear. They said more arrests could be made before their investigation is complete.
