Wrong-Way Wreck On I-95 Kills 2, Injures 3

FHP Investigates Wreck In St. Johns County

The Florida Highway Patrol said heavy rain may have contributed to an overnight wreck on Interstate 95 that killed two people and injured three others.

Troopers said a St. Augustine woman was driving south on I-95 northbound between International Golf Parkway and state Road 16 about 3 a.m. when her car crashed head-on into an SUV carrying a family from South Carolina.

The driver of the car, 33-year-old Rachel Higgins, died at the scene.

Debra Baughman, a 45-year-old passenger in the SUV, also died at the scene. The driver of the SUV, Scott Baughman, 44, and 19-year-old Lindsey Baughman were in fair condition at Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center. Aaron Baughman, 13, was reported in critical condition at Shands.

"We're still trying to determine where she may have got on the wrong way and how long she'd been there," FHP Lt. Bill Leeper said. "It was bad. When you have someone traveling on the wrong side of the road, the motorist traveling in the right direction doesn't expect that."

Troopers said there was heavy rain at the time of the wreck. They are also looking into whether alcohol played a factor.

The northbound lanes of I-95 were detoured onto U.S. 1 for more than two hours while the wreck was investigated and cleared.

The highway patrol said Thursday's wreck was the third wrong-way, head-on collision on I-95 in St. Johns County in about a year.

Police also said no one in either vehicle involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt.
