State Attorney Investigates Officer Shooting Of Beer Keg

POSTED: Tuesday, July 22, 2008
UPDATED: 12:48 am EDT July 23, 2008

Months after somebody with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office opened fire on a keg filled with beer, the sheriff was criticized and accused of covering up the bizarre shooting incident.

The keg shooting happened after police raided an underage drinking party being held in the woods. The shots fired at the keg have become the focus of an investigation.

The juveniles spotted at the party ran off when officers arrived, and instead of confiscating the keg, Channel 4 learned, the officers shot the keg to teach the kids a lesson.

However, there was no report or record about the incident.

Putnam County Sheriff Dean Kelly might have some explaining to do about the beer keg shooting because the state attorney's office is looking into the case.

"There have been allegations that one or more shots were fired into or at the beer keg by law enforcement officers," Tanner said.

Tanner's office has begun looking into the incident to determine whether any charges should be filed.

The sheriff's office issued a statement on Tuesday about the keg shooting, saying it would fully cooperate with the review and was waiting to be contacted by the state attorney.

Kelly is up for re-election, and although the keg shooting happened last year, the keg shooting came up during a recent political forum.

Kelly's opponent, Jeff Hardy, said he was not planning to use the keg shooting as a political issue, but the topic is now being discussed all over town.

Hardy said he would have handled the underage drinking party much differently.

"I believe the keg should have been seized. I think there should have been an investigation. I believe if they would have investigated it, they could have found who rented the keg, and punitive or legal measures could have been taken properly," Hardy said.

The sheriff said he did not want to talk about the incident or his involvement in the case, saying it could jeopardize his investigation.
