JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Homicide detectives were called to Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery Wednesday afternoon after a 24-year-old man was found dead in a car.
Police were called to the cemetery at 7242 Normandy Blvd. by an employee of the cemetery who checked out a Honda Accord that had been parked there since Monday.
Employees originally thought the vehicle belonged to a relative visiting a gravesite, but after seeing the same car there Wednesday morning, they looked inside and saw a body slumped over in the back seat.
"One of the gravediggers saw the car. They said the car has been here for a while and they thought the car was stolen. So, they basically checked and saw a body in the car," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. T.K. Waters.
Police identified the victim as Levi Earl Rollins. Investigators have not released the cause of death, but some cemetery workers said it appeared the man had been shot in the chest about three times.
"He was laying in the car in the back seat. His pockets were all pulled out, too. So, it looked like he could have been robbed," said cemetery worker Josh Bennett.
Police said Rollins was last seen Sunday night by a relative. Detectives had the vehicle taken to a warehouse where evidence would be collected.
Anyone with any information about Rollins' death is asked to call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
