Bicyclist Hit By Pickup In St. Nicholas Dies

POSTED: Wednesday, July 23, 2008
UPDATED: 11:01 am EDT July 24, 2008

A man was struck by a pickup truck in St. Nicholas Wednesday evening has died.

The wreck took place near the foot of a bridge close to the intersection of Atlantic Boulevard and Holmesdale Road, just east of Interstate 95.

Police said 52-year-old Johnny Leonard Jones was on bicycle in the median at the crosswalk when he pulled out in front of traffic.

They said the driver of an oncoming Toyota pickup truck had a green light and did not have enough time to react and hit Jones, knocking him off his bike.

Jones was taken to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Police announced Thursday morning that he died.

Detectives said it appears the driver of the pickup had the right-of-way, and there was no indication that either the driver or the bicyclist involved was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Jones was not wearing a helmet.

Police said the driver of the pickup truck has not been charged in the wreck. The investigation is ongoing.
