Palms Apartments Teen Shot

Officer Shoots Robbery Suspect; Search On For 2 Others

15-Year-Old Was In Stable Condition

POSTED: 5:14 am EDT July 25, 2008

An officer hit by a car carrying suspects in a home-invasion robbery pulled his gun and opened fire, wounding a 15-year-old, police said. Police continue to search for two other men who ran from the scene.

The second police-involved shooting of the week occurred about 2 a.m. Friday as officers responded to a 911 call at the Palms Apartments in the 11000 block of Beach Boulevard.

JSO Chief Rick Graham said that as the first officer arrived, he encountered three men leaving the complex in a car without headlights that he believed were suspects in the robbery.

Graham said when the officer tried to stop the car, the car sped up and headed directly at the officer, pinning him to the door of his police car.

"The car intentionally sped up, changed directions in attempt to strike Officer Kornegay. The suspect actually did strike the patrol car," said Graham.

Graham said Officer C. L. Kornegay drew his weapon and fired several shots at the car, striking Jerry McTyre. The teenager was transported to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, where he was in stable condition after surgery on Friday.

Kornegay was also transported to Shands, where he was treated and released for injuries to his lower body.

The other two people in the car took off on foot and were still on the loose at 5 p.m. Friday.

According to the brother of one of roommates in the apartment, three men with guns busted through the door, forced two victims to the ground and tied them up. One of the roommates managed to jump out a window second-story window, find a phone and call 911.

Suspects' car towed away
The Dodge Charger that police said struck and pinned an officer in the door of his patrol car is towed away Friday morning.
The robbers were pulling away in a stolen red Dodge Charger when Kornegay arrived.

In a search of that car, officers found a short-barreled shotgun, a loaded handgun and several items stolen from the apartment -- including computer equipment, a video-game system, TVs and cell phones.

Graham said McTyre will be charged with possession of a short-barreled shotgun and will likely face other charges related to the robbery.

"It's very sad that a 15-year-old individual has chosen the life of crime," Graham said. "He's graduated to the big leagues right now. This is no petty, juvenile-type crime."

Graham would not say whether McTyre provided any information about the other two suspects that were still at large.

McTyre has an arrest record that includes being taken into custody in connection with cocaine possession and lying to police in March.

Police ask anyone that has any information that could help find the two suspects or help in the investigation call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS.

This is the 15th police-involved shooting in 2008.

"I've spent way to much time speaking ... about officer-involved incidents where several of our officers have come close to losing their lives or being seriously injured," Graham said at a Friday afternoon news conference. "There's been yet another incident this morning, one of our patrol officers had to use deadly force against a group of gun-toting thugs."
