JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The wife of state attorney hopeful Jay Plotkin sent a scathing letter to her husband's opponent, Angela Corey, criticizing some of Corey's comments about her family.
In her letter to Corey, Cheryl Plotkin accused Corey of stooping to a new low in politics by bringing her children into the campaign in a "reckless manner."
The letter, which is dated Friday, July 25, delivered a strongly worded attack on Corey, claiming the candidate is desperate.
"Your unfounded accusation that we placed our children in public schools for political appearances was a desperate statement made by a desperate candidate who is losing on the merits and will go to any length to try to win an election," Cheryl Plotkin wrote.
Channel 4 reporter Diane Cho talked with the candidates about the letter and the comments the sparked the issue.
"We were at a public forum at a public high school in Clay County and Ms. Corey insinuated that my wife and I had somehow place our oldest daughter in public school for political appearance purposes. My wife and I are outraged by that and we await an apology from my opponent," said Jay Plotkin.
Without going into specifics on what exactly Corey said Plotkin addressed the media by saying her words were nothing more than political gamesmanship.
"(It's a) low blow of the lowest type. Do not bring my children into this in terms of making them a political issue," Jay Plotkin said.
However, Corey said Plotkin brought the issue up by telling the audience his daughter attends public school, failing to mention the child ever went to private school in the past.
"The same with his daughter being in public school. He doesn't mention she was in private school the first eight years of school. My point is if there's an issue with bringing his children's education into the campaign, why has he not only gone around talking about talking about her being in public school but he mentions the name of the high school?" Corey said.
In her letter to Corey, Cheryl Plotkin wrote, "I demand an apology not only for my children, but for all the children in our community … The fact that my daughter graduated from her eigth grade private school and began the ninth grade in an honors program at an outstanding public school was a family decision that was decided with her best interest at heart -- pure and simple."
Corey said the apology the public and Cheryl Plotkin should hear should come from her opponent.
"The apology should come from Jay Plotkin for not telling the public that he's a lifelong Democrat who switched to the Republican Party and for mentioning the high school by name, on numerous occasions, where his daughter goes. If Cheryl Plotkin wants an apology, she should get it from Jay Plotkin," Corey said.

Channel 4 invites viewers to tune in on August 12 at 8 p.m., when both candidates will take part in a live TV debate.
