State Attorney To Release New Info In Gang Rape Investigation

POSTED: Monday, July 28, 2008
UPDATED: 11:11 am EDT July 29, 2008

On the eve of a news conference by the state attorney, the Florida Times Union reported that no charges will be filed in the investigation into a 15-year-old girl's allegation that several people raped her on the beach.

For about eight weeks, detectives have been investigating allegations that the teenage girl was gang raped after an end-of-the-school-year party held at a Neptune Beach oceanfront home.

Neptune Beach police said at least 20 students, mostly from The Bolles School, attended the party in early June. Police said the teenagers were drinking.

The 15-year-old girl, who was found unconscious on the beach, told police five people raped her. She told them two held her down while the attack happened.

On July 15, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement turned over the results of its analysis of evidence from the incident to the Neptune Beach Police Department and the state attorney's office, allowing the agencies to move forward in their investigations.

On Tuesday morning, State Attorney Harry Shorstein is expected to reveal some answers to the questions many people want to know during a 10 a.m. news conference; however, on Monday night, the Florida Times Union reported there are not going to be any charges.

Earlier this month, the 15-year-old's father told Channel 4 his family was being patient and holding out hope someone would be held accountable for what he said his daughter went through.

"Oh, I'm not frustrated. Everybody wants immediate gratification, and I'm one of them … I want a solution or at least five names, but I don't have it. I'll keep waiting," the teen's father said.

Neither he nor his attorney was available to comment Monday evening.
