JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The search is on for a man and woman accused of taking advantage of the city's public library to the tune of $12,236.31.
Jacksonville police said 32-year-old Felicia Tillery and 35-year-old Eddie Allen came up with a scheme to rip off the library for thousands of dollars by using dozens of library cards.
Police said Tillery and Allen used the names of the 37 children they claimed they had to get 37 library cards. According to investigators, the pair then checked out books, DVDs and comic books and never returned the materials.
Two weeks ago, Allen was featured Channel 4's Wheel of Justice. Officers said he and Tillery have stolen more than $12,000 worth of materials from the library in the past two months.
"It's highly unlikely that they have 37 children that they are responsible for -- very highly unlikely. It's just a very deceitful scheme they they've used to get this property out so they can sell it," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman Ken Jefferson.
"We have to look at our budget and see how much money we have and what we can replace and what we cannot replace," said Stacie Bucher, of the Jacksonville Public Library.
Officials with the library said like most city services they too are under a budget crunch, and they said when items are stolen, everyone loses.
"We want to get the most out of budget for our library customer," Bucher said. "When something like this happens, materials are then not available for other people to borrow. It does cost money for us to replace the materials."
She said the library puts aside some money for stolen books and DVDs, but $12,000 worth of stolen materials is a big loss.
