JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The exotic creatures from around the globe that roam the Northside of Jacksonville recently earned the city's zoo some national recognition.
A traveler's guide ranked Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens as one of the best in the country.
The Intrepid Traveler presented the America's Best Zoo Award to the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens.
"There are over 2,000 zoos of all descriptions in the United States. Over 200 of them are members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and the authors of America's Best Zoos ... have selected out of all of those 60 zoos that represent the very best that America has to offer," said Kelly Monaghan, of the Intrepid Traveler.
In addition to America's Best Zoo, the Jacksonville's zoo is now home to the No. 1 South American exhibit featuring the giant otter.
Also a part of the South American exhibit is the Range of the Jaguar, which is one of a kind.
"It's unique. There's nothing else like it anywhere in the country," Monaghan said.
Ehrline Tenly said she remembers what the zoo used to look like when she visited the zoo as a child. She said the recent honor is well deserved.
"It's well earned. They've done a lot here. They need to be recognized," Tenly said.
For those who have not had a chance to check out the zoo recently, executive director Dennis Pate has one message.
"It's not the zoo you remembered," Pate said.
The zoo also has botanical gardens available for visitors' viewing pleasure.
The zoo is open everyday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission costs $12 for adults and $7.50 for children ages 3 to 12. Kids 2 years old and younger get in for free.
