Attempted Robbery Ends With Suspect Shot

POSTED: Monday, August 4, 2008
UPDATED: 8:04 pm EDT August 4, 2008

A person who police said tried to rob a man in the Brentwood area was shot by his victim Monday afternoon.

The suspected robber, 29-year-old Cedric Battle, was in critical condition after the shooting near West 24th and Pearl streets.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office received a call about someone being shot shortly after 1 p.m. That's when police said they found an armed robber who picked the wrong target.

"Being robbed, the person actually defended himself by shooting the assailant. The assailant ran away," said JSO homicide Sgt. Derrick Lewis.

He said the victim, 50-year-old Klay Bickell, was on West 24th Street repairing a house when Battle approached him and demanded money.

During the attempted robbery, Bickell was able to shoot Battle. Battle fled but later collapsed near 23rd and Pearl streets, according to police.

Lewis said Bickell was armed because he felt threatened working in the area.

"He felt that he was in a dangerous area, so he carried a gun on him or nearby. So, he had a gun available to him, and you know the rest," Lewis said.

The wounded suspect was taken to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Bickell was not hurt during the incident. The attempted robbery victim was interviewed by detectives and was later released.
