Police Suspect Foul Play In Woman's Death

Officers Get Search Warrant Before Entering

POSTED: Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Police have not released much information about the death of a 65-year-old woman inside her Westside townhouse, but investigators said they suspect foul play.

Neighbors said screams were heard from the home on Bennington Drive Tuesday evening and someone called 911.

"All the dogs in the neighborhood were barking really, really bad last night," resident Pat Shaffer said.

Responding officers couldn't get in right away.

"We had to go though some legal processes to get into the residence -- obtaining a search warrant, what have you," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Dan Jansen said.

When officers finally entered about 10:30 p.m., they found Deloria Futrell's body.

They have not released how she died, but confirmed it was a criminal investigation.

Neighbors said Futrell was very friendly, but kept to herself. They said she was often alone in the house because her husband traveled for business.

"It really stunned me to hear that something happened to her like that," said neighbor Charles Jennings. "She didn't bother anybody."

Residents told Channel 4's Laura Mazzeo that Futrell never opened the door to anyone she didn't know, but they regularly saw her walking her dog in the area.

Police spend most of Tuesday night canvassing the neighborhood for information and potential witnesses.

Anyone with information about the woman's death or anything suspicious in that neighborhood is asked to call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
