PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- A Palatka man was shot shortly before midnight Tuesday after being carjacked, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies and detectives responded to a home on Carver Street, just outside of the northern city limits of Palatka, in response to a 911 call.
They said a caller told them that an injured man had come to his residence and stated that he had been shot in the upper abdomen.
Investigators have since learned that 28-years-old Jamie Campbell and another person were sitting in Campbell’s car on Spruce Lane, also just north of Palatka, when they were confronted by two men wearing ski masks.
According to PCSO, both of the men were armed and ordered the victims out of the car. As the victims ran from the scene, at least one shot was fired.
It is believed that Campbell was shot in the back as he fled, authorities said.
"Mr. Campbell and his friend did exactly what they were supposed to, what they were asked to do, even though it was at gunpoint. They got out of car and were giving the vehicle up," said Putnam County Major Keith Riddick. "Somebody fired a shot as they were running away. I don't know why -- meanness."
Campbell then ran to the Carver Street residence. Campbell was flown by air ambulance to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, where he remained on Wednesday in critical condition.
The gunmen took off in Campbell’s green 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer. The car was located at about 9:45 a.m. near North 18th Street in Palatka.
Anyone with information that could help Putnam detectives solve the crime is asked to contact either Putnam County Sheriff's Detective John Merchant at 386-329-0881 or Crimestoppers at 888-277-8477.
