TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The state is moving to fire 12 juvenile detention officers for allegedly accessing inappropriate Web site -- some of them containing adult pornography videos -- on a state computer at a St. Augustine facility.
Department of Juvenile Justice Secretary Frank Peterman Jr. announced Thursday that 11 officers and one supervisor are on administrative leave and termination proceedings are under way. He said such "heinous" behavior won't be tolerated by employees who are responsible for overseeing children.
"The secretary wants to ensure that the officers are concentrating on their duties here at the detention center and not focusing on any Internet sites that aren't appropriate," said Karen McNeal, superintendent of the detention facility.
Peterman said there's no evidence children saw the images at the St. Johns Regional Detention Center -- which were viewed in the middle of the night when the kids were sleeping -- nor was child pornography involved.
Channel 4 was told the officers were caught because the computer they were using became infected by a virus.
"They came and they removed the hard drive, and then they looked at the history of the hard drive," McNeal said.
The facility has a total of 40 detention officers. The 12 being dismissed have the right to appeal.
The case remains under investigation.
