Waterspout Over River Becomes Tornado

Fleming Island residents had some scary moments Friday afternoon when a tornado warning was issued for the area.

A waterspout spotted on the St. Johns River is believed to have made landfall in Clay County.

"The funnel cloud is a cloud that looks like a tornado but doesn’t touch down. A tornado, or in this case a waterspout, in these squally conditions that we're dealing with, touch down and lift up and touch down and lift up," said Channel 4 Senior Meteorologist John Gaughan.

Several people who live on Fleming Street in Clay County said they witnessed a tornado come down in their neighborhood.

Residents told Channel 4 they saw the tornado come through some trees on Fourth Street and passed between two homes before jumping over to Covington Lane.

One of the homes had some of its siding ripped off; however, not much other damage was reported.

"We were all in the bedroom and hiding underneath the mattress -- just hiding under there waiting because we heard the tornado warning. I went and looked out the back window and saw the funnel cloud and said 'Yep, that's it,'" said one resident.

He said he was amazed no significant damage was done to his home. A total of about $12,000 of damage was done.

No one was injured.

The tornado warning for Clay County expired at 9:45 p.m.
