Girlfriend Charged In Crash That Killed Officer

Report: Blood-Alcohol Was Twice Legal Limit

POSTED: Sunday, September 14, 2008

The woman driving when a Jacksonville police officer was killed in a crash six week ago was legally drunk, according to the accident report.

Michael Hartsfield died July 30 after the single-vehicle crash on Fort Caroline Road.

On Friday, Vicki Mullins, 45, was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter.

Officers said Mullins lost control of the car on a curve about 10:30 p.m., hit a ditch and culvert before landing upside down.

Hartsfield had to be cut out of the vehicle and died at Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center.

Mullins was hurt in the crash but has recovered. Police said Mullins' blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit.

She was being held in the Duval County jail on $750,003 bond.

Hartsfield, 50, was an 18-year veteran of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
