Tourist Is Florida's Latest Shark Bite Victim

22nd Bite Ties Volusia County's Record For 1 Year

POSTED: Monday, September 15, 2008

Authorities on Florida's Atlantic coast say a tourist from Tennessee is the 22nd shark bite victim of the year.

Volusia County beach patrol spokesman Captain Scott Petersohn said the 32-year-old visitor was swimming in waist-deep water when he was bitten Sunday morning.

The victim drove himself to the hospital, WKMG-TV reported.

Officials said the man received two lacerations to his heel and will most likely "get a couple of sutures."

Sunday's bite ties the record for the most shark bites in the Volusia County in a year. That record was set in 2001.
