Could Durango-Georgia Become A Biotech Plant?
Researcher: Company Would Turn Paper Mill Into Ethanol Plant
Dorin Schumacher, chairman and president of the consortium, told the group that Recovery and Reclamation Inc. has expressed interest in buying the Durango-Georgia facility to produce 3.4 million gallons of ethanol -- a fuel make from plant material -- and other commercially-viable by-products each year.
Schumacher outlined a four-phase plan that would ultimately result in a facility employing more than 3,000 people in jobs paying between $25,000 and $100,000 annually.
The environmentally friendly, alternative-energy production facility could qualify for federal grants, according to Kingston's representative at the meeting.
Only one midlevel Durango-Georgia manager attended the meeting. In the past, the company has not expressed interest in selling the plant.
