Jury Selection Begins In Trial For 2005 Slaying

POSTED: Monday, September 29, 2008
UPDATED: 6:48 pm EDT September 29, 2008

Jury selection began on Monday in the trial of man accused of killing two men and raping a Duval County corrections officer while in jail awaiting trial.

Jonathan Tave is accused of killing Cedric Henry during a carjacking attempt in January 2005, the 2004 slaying of Willie Tomblin and the rape of a female corrections officer in 2008.

Tave was present in court on Monday with extra security guards watching his every move. The 27-year-old was also made to wear leg braces to prevent any attempt to get away.

Monday's jury selection was for the trial of the slaying of Henry. Tave is accused of shooting Henry during a robbery and carjacking on Broward Road.

In court, potential jurors were questioned to determine whether they heard about the slaying, the highly publicized jail attack or the slew of other violent charges against Tave.

A jury was expected to be seated by the end of the day on Monday. Tave's trial will begin on Wednesday.

Despite what that jury decides, Tave will still face two additional trials for the other charges he is facing.
