Callahan Woman Dies In Georgia House Fire

Homeowner, Victim's Children Escape Blaze

POSTED: Tuesday, September 30, 2008

A 39-year-old Callahan, Fla., woman died in a Sunday morning fire that consumed a mobile home in Blackshear, Ga.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office said Teresa Thompson Crews died in the fire, which started about 5:30 a.m. in the home on Blue Lake Road.

Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner's office said the homeowner, Malcolm Lewis Jr., and Crew's 9-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter were able to escape the fire without injury.

Sheriff Richard King told the Waycross Journal-Herald that the victim's body was not burned and they believe she died of smoke inhalation. That will be confirmed by an autopsy to be conducted at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's facility in Savannah.

Although authorities do not suspect foul play in her death, the GBI was assisting local law enforcement and state Fire Marshal's Office in finding the cause of the fire.
