JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two men sitting in a Northwest Jacksonville park last weekend told investigators two thieves walked up and asked for a light before minutes later returning with guns and making demands.
The men were just two of the many people victimized after a violent weekend in the River City.
Johnnie Hammock, 73, told Channel 4 he enjoyed going to the park on Benedict Road everyday, until Sunday.
"I couldn't believe it. I still don't believe it," Hammock said.
He said he was sitting at a picnic table talking with his friend at about 7 p.m. when two armed men came up from behind them pointing weapons at their heads. He said one was carrying a sawed-off shotgun and demanding money.
"Told me to hold my head down on the table until they leave the park, if not they was going to kill us," Hammock said.
The robbers walked away with the men's cash and keys.
"My life flashed before my eyes," Hammock said.
He said he is lucky to be alive; but others in Jacksonville weren't as fortunate last weekend.
Early Saturday morning, police said three men were arguing inside the Waffle House restaurant off Duval Road when the yelling escalated into gunfire. Two people were shot, and one of them died.
Also on Saturday, a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed at his Southside apartment complex
Later that night, on the Westside, another man was found lying in the middle of Belfort Road with gunshot wounds. Police said they believe the 18-year-old victim managed to walk several blocks from the original scene of the shooting before he finally collapsed.
On Monday, police had no motive in the 18-year-old's shooing and no suspected gunman.
The violence didn't end there. Before the end of Saturday, a 72-year-old man was beaten with a stick in his own home after he opened the door to an attacker he thought was a neighbor ringing the doorbell.
"I have no concept of what they were trying to do except to come in at random and breaking into someone's home," said the victim.
While police continue their investigations...the victims are now left to wonder what's next.
"I'm still scared. I'm certainly scared. I don't know what tomorrow's going to bring or next week's going to bring. My wife keeps saying we don't belong here," said the 72-year-old attack victim.
"I hope they get caught. The quicker the better," Hammock said.
Anyone with information about any of last weekend's crimes is asked to call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
