Mom: Football Players Attacked Son, 13

Boy Beaten Up Says Fight Was Over Girl

A mother who said her 13-year-old son was beaten up by some members of a Westside middle school football team is demanding answers.

Ida Ricks said she didn't know anything about the attack on her son until he came home from Jeb Stuart Middle School on Monday.

"He was kicked, beaten, stomped with cleats," Ricks said.

A day after the incident, Ricks and her son, Jacoby Johnson, went to the middle school to get answers as to why he was beaten by some members of the football team and why Ricks was not notified by the school.

"I am mad because they did not call me. I am mad because they did not protect my son," Ricks said.

She said when Jacoby came home, that's when she found out what happened. She said he had blood on his face but he cleaned it off and took some photos that she said shows his swollen face.

Jacoby told Channel 4 the fight was over a girl.

"At first, it was me and a dude fighting. It was raining and I had slipped, and then the whole football team came and starting kicking me and hitting me on the ground," Jacoby said.

Jeb Stuart Middle School Principal Gregory Bostic confirmed the fight did happen and that it did involve members of the school's football team. He said Jacoby was not bleeding when he saw him and that he did not call the boy's mother because he did not have all the facts.

"At this time, we are going to discipline them accordingly," said Bostic.

However, Ricks said she has her own thoughts on what should happen.

"I'm prosecuting. Every child on that team that touched my son will be prosecuted. I won't stand for it. I'm standing up for every mom who sends their child to school. If the principal can't do their job and can't protect the kids, I will," Ricks said.

Ricks met with the school's resource officer on Tuesday. She said she does plan to press charges.
