JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Four people were arrested and more than 100 pit bulls were confiscated from a Northside house Friday afternoon. Police said they suspect the dogs were being used in fights.
Police and animal control officers raided a house in the 9000 block of Sunset Drive, where they took away 116 dogs.
Officers said they had been working the case for several months. They said the dogs were used for fighting and some of the dogs had the scars to prove it.
According to police reports, neighbor complaints led detectives to investigate and do some undercover work in the case.
Channel 4 was permitted to see some of the evidence officers found behind the home, where both puppies and adult dogs were found.
There were some kennels in the back yard, but many of the dogs were staked next to each other on chains outside.
While the dogs seemed to be friendly, animal control workers said the animals could still be fighters.
Some of the evidence found that investigators believe was used to train the dogs included harnesses, a cattle prod, an IV bag used on the exhausted dogs and scales.
Pharmaceuticals that were being used on the dogs were found inside of a shed.
Neighbors in the area said they knew the dogs were at the house, but they said they had no idea about the dogfighting.
"I don't know what the situation is going on here. From what I'm understanding, they're saying something about dogfighting and stuff like that. If something like that was going on, we would have known staying here for two years. There's nothing like that going on, not over there," said one neighbor who asked not to be identified.
Police said the animals had likely been taken to other locations to fight other dogs.
Animal control said most of the confiscated dogs would have to be put down. They said about 15 puppies would be rehabilitated and made adoptable, but they said most of the adult dogs would have to be euthanized.
The operations manager for animal control told Channel 4 this is the worst part of their jobs.
"It's very sad that they have to end up not being adopted out and in good homes," said the manager, who asked not to be identified because of the ongoing investigation.
Four people, including the homeowner, were arrested and charged with using animals for the purpose of fighting and drug-related charges.
Police said 36-year-old Daryl Crowden raised the dogs and held the fights on his property, along with another man, Charles Jones. Investigators said both men also sold crack out of the home.
Two others were also arrested on drug charges during the raid.
